The Van Vechten collection includes catalogs, programs, announcements, and invitations documenting Afro-American participation in the visual arts, dance, drama, music, and literature. Highlights include material relating to noted artists Richmond Barthe, Romare Bearden, Lois Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, Horace Pippin, and Hale Woodruff; dancers Josephine Baker, Janet Collins, Katherine Dunham, and Moncion Francisco; the drama companies Washington Repertory Players, American Negro Theatre, Rose McClendon Players, Krigwa Players, Gilpin Players, Karamu House, Howard University Players, and Dillard University Players Guild; and musicians Louis Armstrong, Carol Brice, Billie Holiday, and Dorothy Maynor.

The collection includes family papers, particularly material relating to Waring's wife, portraitist Laura Wheeler Waring. Of note are an original watercolor, a printed guide from the Howard University Gallery of Art, reproductions of portraits, and correspondence, particularly letters between Walter Waring and Lucille Paul relating to a Laura Wheeler Waring painting damaged while on loan to the Gay Northeaster's Club.
