  • Confederacy surrenders at Appomattox, Virginia.
  • Many states enact "Black Codes."
  • Abraham Lincoln is assassinated in Washington, D.C.
  • Freedmen's Savings and Trust Company, the first bank for Blacks, opens in Washington, D.C.
  • Reverend Patrick F. Healy becomes 1st Black to receive a Ph.D.  He receives his degree in Belgium.
  • Freedmen's Bureau is established by Congress to aid freed Blacks.  General Oliver O. Howard is appointed to head the Bureau.
  • Congress passes 13th Amendment to Constitution abolishing slavery.
  • Shaw University is founded, Raleigh, NC.
  • Atlanta University is founded, Atlanta, GA.
  • Wayland (Virginia Union) is founded.
  • Martin R. Delany is commissioned a major in the Union Army.
  • Ku Klux Klan is organized in Pulaski, Tennessee.
  • Slavery ends in Texas and "Juneteenth" is celebrated.
