M. Langston addressed the people of Jersey City, N.J. on the evening of April 17, 1877,
upon "The Other Phase of Reconstruction." The audience was large and
enthusiastic and listened earnestly to the words of the eloquent and able defender of the
policy which proposes to protect the rights of his people by peaceful rather than by
