The Lois Mailou Jones Collection
Lois Mailou Jones (1905-1998) was a
renowned African American artist who
studied in Paris, Haiti, and in a number of
African countries.  She was a professor of
art at Howard University from 1930-1977,
where she was influenced by philosopher
Alain Locke.  She referred to the 1940s as
the beginning of her Locke Period, when
she began to explore subjects more
reflective of her own heritage.
