Walter Washington became the first Black elected mayor in D.C. since 1871.

1979

Marion Barry is elected mayor of D.C.

1991

Sharon Pratt Dixon became the first woman elected mayor of D.C.

1995

Congress appointed a financial control board composed of Joyce A. Ladner, Constance B. Newman, Stephen D. Harlan, Edward A. Singletary and chair Dr. Andrew F. Brimmer, to oversee the District of Columbia.

1999

Anthony Williams became the fourth Black elected mayor of D.C.
