Rev. Henry Highland Garnet²²

     The Rev. Garnet was a member of the Howard Board of Trustees during the period 1867-1869. He was the first African American elected to the Board.

John Mercer Langston²³

     During 1868-1875, John Mercer Langston was a Professor of Law in the Howard University Law Department. He served as the Department’s Dean during the years 1870-1875. From 1873 to 1875, Langston was the University’s Vice President and Acting President. He was one of the University’s earliest African American faculty members and executive-level officials.
