James B. Johnson, Esq.11

     During 1867-1876, James B. Johnson was a member of the Howard University Board of Trustees. Johnson was the Board’s Treasurer from 1871 to 1876, and served as its Secretary during 1873-1876.

Joseph Taber Johnson, M.D.12

     Dr. Johnson was a faculty member in the Howard University Medical Department from 1868 to 1872. His subject areas were "Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Children," and "Clinical Midwifery." He also served as the Secretary of the Medical Department during 1870-1872.

Silas Lawrence Loomis, M.D.13

     Dr. Loomis was a Howard trustee from 1867 to 1871. From 1868 to 1871, he served as the first Dean of the Howard University Medical Department. Dr. Loomis taught "Chemistry and Toxicology." During the period 1870-1871, he held the title "University Professor of Chemistry."

Gideon S. Palmer, M.D.14

     A member of the Howard University Medical Department from 1868 to 1876, Dr. Palmer taught "Physiology and Microscopy," "Physiology and Hygiene," and "Physiology, Hygiene and Pharmacy." He was a "Clinical Lecturer on Diseases of the Nervous System," and served as Dean of the Medical Department during 1870-1872 and 1874-1876.

Charles Burleigh Purvis, M.D.15

     During 1868-1876, Dr. Purvis was a member of the Howard University Medical Department. His subject areas were " Materia Medica and Therapeutics," "Botany," "Materia Medica and Medical Jurisprudence," and "Obstetrics and Diseases of Women and Clinical Midwifery." Dr. Purvis also served as a "Clinical Lecturer on Diseases of the Chest." He was one of the University’s earliest African American faculty members.
