  • Awarded by Catholic University, Margurite Thomas is the first African American woman to receive a Ph.D in geology.

  • The first African American woman to earn a Ph.D in chemistry is Marie M. Daly.

  • The first African American women to earn Ph.D degrees in mathematics are Marjorie Lee Brown and Evelyn Boyd Granville.
1950
  • The first Black woman licensed as an architect in the U.S. is Norma Merrick Sklarek after graduating from the School of Architecture at Columbia University.

  • Mildred Fay Jefferson is the first African American to graduate from the Harvard University Medical School.
