Mary Elizabeth Branch, first African American woman to serve as president of a Black college, was president of Tillotson College in Austin, Texas from 1930-1944. Tillotson College (chartered in 1877) merged in 1952 with Huston College (chartered in 1910). Huston-Tillotson College is a church-related, historically Black institution.
