1974 to the present, the Howard University Press has published books in such diverse
fields as literature, history, education, communications, political science, social
science, physical science, religion and medicine.22 As the first University press operated by a
historically Black college or university in the United States, the Howard University Press
continues to fulfill its primary mission of giving "
priority to publishing
books and journals that serve to increase the general knowledge, understanding, and
appreciation of the contributions and interests of African Americans, of other U.S.
minorities, and of Black people throughout the world."23
